My Thoughts Post THE Royal Wedding

It is a few days post THE wedding and photos and articles have inundated the internet.  So, I guess I will add to that!  My husband Bruce was even getting in on the tidbits and facts, like why doesn’t the royal family have a last name (you know things that guys think about)?  Apparently, today’s royals still don’t need a last name, but it’s technically Mountbatten-Windsor, a blend of the Queen and her husband’s surnames.

And he had other question’s like, WHY ARE WE SO OBSESSED WITH ROYALTY FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY?  Is it just because we have an American (Meghan) marrying a British Prince (Harry)?  Of course, she’s not the first American to marry into the British royal family. Queen Elizabeth II’s uncle, King Edward VIII, abdicated in 1936 to marry American divorcée Wallis Simpson — something unheard of at the time.

Former US President Barack Obama acknowledged this when Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, visited the White House in 2015. “The American people are quite fond of the royal family,” the President said to Charles. “They like them much better than their own politician.”

Our infatuation may be in part because we do not have our own “royal family”, the Kennedy’s were as close as we came and though we love them and they draw their own beloved attention, it may be divided because they are a democratic family and so the love in the US may be divided.

The wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles was one of the most watched (pre-cable TV) in the world.  Diana instantly drew the hearts of the world and continued even after the divorce, to be the “People’s Princess” and when she died in 1997, the world mourned her death.  The sight of William and Harry walking behind her casket lingered on in the collective American psyche.  American’s (and the world) want a happy ending for the princes, especially after watching them endure such a public pain as losing their mom.

And so here we are, watching (along with the world) the youngest son of the People’s Princess marry his American sweetheart.  It definitely drew attention, over 29 million viewed compared to 23 million when Kate and William married.

So, where to begin?

The church for starters, one word, BREATHTAKING!  Somehow they achieved the most elegant entrance possible but still kept it simple (if you can say that about this many flowers and greenery).

The stars arrived and they brought the FASHION!

George and Amal Clooney (Amal looked amazing in her yellow ensemble).

Oprah in pale pink (she had her outfit sent overnight because she changed her mind).  And Idris Elba looked quite handsome in  a classic black suit.Actress Janina Gavanker looked stunning in her coral vintage dress.

The SUITS cast looked incredible.  Loved the floral Valentino on James Blunts wife Sofia, I thought it charming and very “English”.  Also loved Gina Rafferty‘s navy dress and Gina Torres red dress looked stunning, yet simple.

Now on to Royal Family Fashion

One of my favorite dresses was that of Lady Kitty Spencer, who nailed it in this Dolce and Gabbana.  She looked impeccable.

Charles Spencer (brother to the late Princess Diana) and his wife Countess Spencer (who killed it in this purple Pamella Roland violet cape dress-she somehow looks like dark beauty Maleficent) attended the wedding also.

Pre-wedding Jitters

The brothers had some pre-wedding bonding time.Meghan arrived with her mother, Doria.

Meghan’s entrance to the church. Her poignant and symbolic processional walk.Charles did his best to offer kind words and obvious support as he escorted her down the aisle.

The bride and groom were nervous and perfect!  Ok well let’s be honest, Harry looked nervous and fidgety but Meghan was cool and collected.   There is always something moving when you see a man wipe away a few tears.  This day was bittersweet for Harry, and this moment so tender. The ceremony was beautiful and the music was carefully chosen and spectacular. The cellist, Sheku Kanneth-Mason, performance at the end of the ceremony was splendid, breathtaking and heartrending.

The “royal party” was one of the “cutest”, which consisted of the most adorable page boys and bridesmaids ever!

I thought that her wedding dress was simple and classic, a Divenchy.  It channeled Jackie Kennedy.  Her hair soft and natural looking.  The only critical review has been that her dress, actually both, seemed a bit loose about her middle and not as fitted.  But if she is like any bride, she probably lost weight in the week prior and the fit may have been a bit off.  Small peanuts when you consider that overall, she was stunning!

I especially loved to see Meghan’s mother and I couldn’t help but wonder what it must be like to watch your daughter marry a prince?  It is every girl’s fantasy and every mother’s dream.  It broke my heart to see her sit alone, give this lady a hand to hold….she looked enthralled at her daughters dream day.

Charles escorted Doria out of the church along with his wife, Camilla.Kate (beautiful in her Alexander McQueen, who cares that she has worn it before!) encouraging Charlotte (who already seems quite comfortable in front of the camera) for a friendly wave.Unlike big brother George who seemed a bit over the day.

Stunning (and symbolic) family portrait.

After it was over, they shared a sweet kiss and then Harry and Meghan held hands as they rode off in their horse drawn carriage.

It’s off to the party in a jag.  Swoon!

I also loved her second dress, sassier but still a classic style.  She channeled a bit of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.  Her hair is fun and a bit more tousled.

I loved it.  It was simple (as far as Royal weddings go) and classic.  I loved the dresses, the décor, the flowers and the overall feel of it.  This wedding along with William and Kate’s channeled every bit the splendor that I remember of Diana and Charles wedding so long ago, but in a Harry and Meghan way.

What is it like to be Meghan Markle?  What can it be like to be an “all American, girl next door” and to live out the fantasy that is every girls dream by marrying a handsome, sweet, generous and genuinely kind prince that is loved by the world?

And what is it like for Harry to meet a strong, independent, charismatic and beautiful woman who is already changing the image of what has always been a stiff royal family?  It has to be a breath of fresh air for him and it has to remind him a little of his beloved mum.  Harry seems to channel a bit more of Diana.  He has always walked to the beat of his own drum, more so than big brother William (who has a few more immediate responsibilities).  His new bride and this wedding, are just a small example of the carefree spirit that Harry exudes.  He leads with his heart, and that is refreshing.

Fairy tales do exist.

Mostly, it seems obvious and apparent that Harry and Meghan love one another and that love, their love in a way, is inspiring to the world.  We see and hear too much of all that is bad in the world, we are inundated with it and to see something beautiful in a symbolic “they did it their way” union, is exactly what we needed.

It was a pleasure and honor to witness it.

Out In Theaters Today

Can we just say “Melissa McCarthy”?  Need we even have to say anymore?  As it always is with Melissa, this movie looks like a great way to end the week (with some laughs!).  I can’t wait to see it!

When her husband suddenly dumps her, longtime and dedicated housewife Deanna turns regret into reset by going back to college. Unfortunately, Deanna winds up at the same school as her less-than-thrilled daughter. Plunging headlong into the campus experience, the outspoken new student soon begins a journey of self-discovery while fully embracing all of the fun, freedom and frat boys that she can handle.

Out in the theater

Marvel Cinematic Universe, what a franchise!

10 years ago they started with the mega hit Iron Man starring Robert Downey Jr (one of my all time favorites).  He was made to play the part of Tony Stark!  In fact so much so that at times, I forget that he is really RDJ and not TS.

This week they came out with Avengers Infinity War.  I plan on seeing it with my son and his girlfriend as soon as she gets here this coming week from California (it is killing me to wait).

I have seen every movie since the first Iron Man in 2008 (many more than once).

I love these movies as do many millions of people.  It’s probably the inner child in all of us that yearns to believe in a hero and maybe, believe that we can be heroes, at least while we are watching the movie.

This week we have been watching Avengers movies, Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor and others while getting ready for the grand finale, Infinity War!  It’s fun to watch as my nephew puts aside some of his other toys to break out his Marvel toys, as he watches along with the movies.  It’s amazing where these movies can take us and our imagination!

I realize that at some point the characters that I love; Tony, Steve (aka Captain America), Hawkeye, Nat, Hulk, and Thor will have to “die”.  I haven’t accepted this yet.

I also realize that some of the newer Marvel characters; Starlord, Ant Man, Spider Man, Dr Strange, Vision and all of the others that we have come to appreciate and love, will either take the reigns or also be killed off in a dramatic universe saving (or ending) way.

Change is always hard.  Maybe also, it’s the fact that as these characters age and must be replaced, I realize I too have grown 10 years older along with Iron Man.  There is a letting go of our youth in letting go of some of these characters.  That’s hard to swallow.

But we know that all good things always come to an end.  But I’m hoping not yet.  I am hoping that the current characters make it through to the next galaxy ending event to save the day (and the universe), once again!

In the meantime, if you are a Marvel fan like I am, get to the theater, grab a bucket of buttered popcorn and enjoy the latest installment of the Avenger’s saga!
