STORIES

I can only imagine.

I recently watched, I Can Only Imagine,” While I watched it I cried like a baby with tears streaming down my face.

The movie was sad, yet moving, and showed the power of God, and how he leaves his word all over in our lives.

Since watching that movie I can’t stop singing, “I Can Only Imagine”. It’s not like it’s the first time I heard this song. It moved me from the first time I listened to it.

Initially when I heard the song it brought me back to my mothers passing.

When my mother died her children were all around her. She was looking toward me when she was leaving this world. She mouthed some words that I couldn’t make out. I have always wondered if she was speaking to me, or to something beyond me. I think she spoke to something beyond me. It was like she was looking past me, almost through me.

When I first heard this song, I thought back to my mom and wondered if she was speaking to Jesus. “I can only imagine what my eyes will see, when your face is before me”.

The movie is a true story about Bart from, “Mercy Me,” and his abusive father. His father was a monster, and literally beat Bart and his mother. Bart’s mother eventually left when Bart was around 11,  but left Bart behind. Toward the end of the movie, when Bart was older, he told his father that he had beat him so badly one night that he laid in pain all night and cried. His father told him he remembered that beating as well, and he told Bart he cried all night because of what he did to Bart. He told Bart that he didn’t know what was wrong with him, or why he did the things he did.

One of Bart’s favorite things to do was to listen to music, however one wouldn’t know what Bart was listening to, because the movie just showed him placing on his headphones as a young child, and throughout the remainder of his school years. Toward the end of the movie, Bart met Amy Grant, who sings Christian music. He told her that her music got him through some hard times, ironically Bart’s, “I Can Only Imagine,” will get Amy through a hard time. Weird, how God works like that.

God was always Bart’s constant in his life when no one else was. It’s so crazy to me how this young child found God all in his own. It just shows the power of God. The power of God if we allow him to be part of our lives.

As a teenager, Barts father encouraged Bart to play football, and Bart did play the game  to satisfy his father, and make him happy. However, Bart was injured while playing highschool football, and was no longer allowed to play due to his injuries. He joined the Glee Club as an extra curricular activity as the sound/lighting guy. When Bart was alone his Glee Club teacher caught him singing and realized how amazing he was. Bart was given the lead even though he never signed up for the part, nor did he want the part. Bart was afraid of what his father would say of him singing in the school play. Bart’s teacher wouldn’t take no for an answer. Bart eventually caved and took lead part in the play, Oklahoma.

Bart’s father was angry that he was spending so much time singing and told Bart to quit dreaming and that he would be nothing.

Here and there through the movie one gained knowledge that Bart loved God. Different parts of the movie it was shown that he would go to church, was part of a a bible club, had a bible, and sang at church.

Eventually, Bart left home after Highschool graduation, because he could no longer tolerate the abuse, and the abusive memories of his father. He joined a band and they called themselves, “Mercy Me”.

“Mercy Me,” eventually had a life changing gig, but it fell through. Bart was told that sometimes his music felt real, and other times it didn’t. His manager sensed that Bart was struggling with his own demons and confronted Bart. Bart decided to go back home and face his father. He knew he needed to face his father to move forward with his potential singing career.

When he came home he was even more tormented by his past. Bart was angry that his father was trying to change, and wanted a relationship with Bart. Eventually, Bart realized that his father was ill and dying from pancreatic cancer.

Bart decided to forgive his father and help answer his questions about God. Bart and his fathers relationship grew, and they became best friends. Bart’s father’s heart became Christ like. He became the father Bart always wanted.

Eventually, Bart’s father died with Bart by his side. Bart went on the road again with his band, Mercy Me, and in his sorrow he was reminiscing through his journal. Page after page, through decades of his life span there were the words, “I CAN ONLY IMAGINE”. Which inspired, Mercy Me, first single. The song, I can only imagine, was a lifetime in the making. Actually, probably eternally in the making. Bart’s story can only be inspired from God.

God was always with Bart! He was always guiding and whispering to Bart. He got Bart through the abuse, and he changed his fathers heart.

Talk about God being involved. The name, Mercy Me, was inspired by his grandmother. Whenever anything out of the ordinary happened she’s would always say, Mercy Me. When Bart told her he was going to join a band and sing, Grandma said, “Mercy Me”.

If Bart would have become successful before writing, “I Can Only Imagine”, he would have never went back to his father, and their relationship may have not healed. His father may have not found Christ like he did. “I Can Only Imagine”, may have never been written, nor the movie created. Both the song, and movie has touched millions of hearts.

Singer, Amy Grant, lost a friend to death when she first heard, I can only Imagine”.  As I said before, she told Bart that this song got her through that hard time.

“I Can Only Imagine”, by Mercy Me.

I can only imagine what it will be like
When I walk, by your side
I can only imagine what my eyes will see
When your face is before me
I can only imagine
I can only imagine
Surrounded by Your glory
What will my heart feel
Will I dance for you Jesus
Or in awe of You be still
Will I stand in your presence
Or to my knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah
Will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine
I can only imagine
I can only imagine when that day comes
When I find myself standing in the Son
I can only imagine when all I would do is forever
Forever worship You
I can only imagine
I can only imagine
Surrounded by Your glory
What will my heart feel
Will I dance for You, Jesus
Or in awe of you be still
Will I stand in your presence
Or to my knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah
Will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine
I can only imagine hey ya ah
Surrounded by Your glory
What will my heart feel
Will I dance for You, Jesus
Or in awe of you be still
Will I stand in Your presence
Or to my knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah
Will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine
I can only imagine hey ya ah
I can only imagine yeah yeah
I can only imagine
I can only imagine ey ey ey
I can only imagine
I can only imagine when all I will do
Is forever, forever worship You
I can only imagine

Can you imagine, what it will be like when we see Christ for the first time?

Life isn’t always easy, and some of us have it harder than others. We can persevere like Bart, and be thankful for our story, or let our demons swallow us up whole. I will always chose to forgive, and let God win versus that nasty devil. When we let GOD win his WILL – will shine through us, our paths will straighten, and things will be right.

Lots of ❤, Roxanne
