I have a room in between my kitchen and laundry room which has served as both a family room and a breakfast room. Over the years, I have switched the function of the room several times because I can’t decide which is more practical, a family room or a breakfast nook (second dining room).
This room is also hard to decorate because it serves as a walk way from my kitchen to the laundry room, and also the space is awkward. One of the four walls has a huge window, another wall has a doorway into the laundry room, and one wall houses a built in desk and built in cubicle that use to store a TV (in the 80s).
The room is small, so on one of the four walls I plan on placing a faux fireplace because it won’t take up much room. I love the wood spindles above this fireplace. My walls in this room are basically black, so my plan is to lighten the room up with lots of white decor.

I love this rug (from Rugs USA) because of the light color and it’s texture. It’s important to add texture to a room as it gives it more interest. I also adore chandeliers and especially this one…….I love the wood beads❤
On the second wall I will place the sofa. I’m absolutely in love with this sofa from Whimsy and Weathered. Whimsy is based out of Mankato, Minnesota
Or I could do this Farmhouse sectional shown here from Ikea.
I love these simple black and white prints from Belle Botanica (found on Etsy). I would place these prints on the wall over the couch. Possibly with a shelf under neath the prints.
On the third wall I would place these flowing white curtains with a hint of a ruffle. I would bring the curtains close up to the ceiling to make the room look a bit bigger. I also love this Hicks Coffee Table from Wayfair, which will go in front of the sofa.
The third wall is 3/4 a wall, as this is where we walk into the kitchen. This wall already has a built in desk and a built in cabinet. This wall will be left as is. I painted the built in and the desk white and there are shelves over the desk. On the shelves I will place white dinnerware from Kirkland’s. The nesting bowls are from E-Bay. This cute vintage coffee pot from Replacements LTD would be a great addition.
Other finishing touches would be old books (like these below from Books Bundle Lane on Etsy), and green botanical’s like this green topiary from Ballard Designs.
Of course, I will throw some adorable pillows on the couch. I adore these throw pillows from Peek Pillow Originals on Etsy.
One of my favorite bloggers who does BLACK walls fabulously is Home and Fabulous (below). This decor inspired picture is glam, which I normally navigate toward. However, I’m challenging myself to decorate a bit more FARMHOUSE, but of course there will be some GLAM showing up somewhere in the scheme. Can’t help myself…..
This farmhouse inspired dining room with black walls from blogger Our Vintage Home Love, is so cozy and welcoming.
There you have it, the ideas for my family room makeover. The family room revamp is well underway. Can’t wait to share the end result with you all!
Lots of ❤, Roxanne
